only by watching this now do I realise how much of DFW's non-fiction is structured like a stand up routine. The ad-libs and glib asides. The truth exaggerated and bent for comedic effect. The subtle rib nudging - 'this is a true story', 'this actually happened,' storyteller's hook. And then the interview - that nervous cockiness, self aware and self loathing and self assured. The jock who became a nerd.
